What’s going on?

Sony Playstation just announced that they’ll be doing away with discs starting in 2028. This basically confirms that the PS6 will be digital only. In a long list of current events affecting my hobby, this one made me want to write for some reason.

Why do I care?

I do keep hearing that physical media is on the way out. As a mainly PC player, it’s already digital only. For my PS5, I buy the physical disc because it lets me choose to resell it or buy it used. Why am I bothered by this choice when PC has been doing it for so long already?

I guess it’s because I don’t trust Sony or any of the console makers for that matter. They’ve shown that once they’re “in the lead”, they’ll make anti-consumer choices like never discounting their games or using Dynamic Pricing on their online store to charge different people different prices.

What gets me the most is they gained A TON of goodwill for the PS4 because they made those videos on how to share discs with a friend, and now they’re just doing what Microsoft was doing a couple generations later.

I get it, the numbers go up for them. Life is a clicker game to the rich and powerful.

Still sucks to be powerless and watch this all happen along with everything else.

What will I do about it?

Not much I can do. I’m one of the lucky ones to have an already pretty good PC for gaming… albeit a DDR4-based system.

I’ll stick to games that get word of mouth for being fun. There’s a lot of indie games that are hitting.

I’m not too crazy about modern, ultra realistic graphics. I still play OpenTTD a ton and still think it’s beautiful.
